The Rat Race

The Rat Race

The Rat Race, we’ve all heard the expression, and I expect we all have an idea of the meaning it conveys. To me it means a struggle and more importantly a struggle that one will never overcome.

To put it succinctly, The Rat Race is a race you can’t win. It’s like the horizon, or perhaps a mirage. You move towards it, but never get there and you wonder why you bothered or perhaps worse you start looking for another.

If I ask, “What is it like to be in your Rat Race” what would you say?

Have you ever said to yourself “I  have to ……… or else ……….”

If you find yourself saying that and it doesn’t feel very comfortable that might be a clue that something is wrong with your thinking.

If you would like to get an idea of how to get rid of that feeling, get out of the Rat Race and still have the things you want, we might have the solution for you.

Your Money or Your Life….

Your Money or Your Life….

The expression “Your Money or Your Life!” has often been attributed to Highwayman in the 18th century. A masked man pointing a pistol would ride up to a traveller and make that demand. He meant give me your money or I will kill you. A sobering proposition.

Latterly this expression took the form of a joke that went something like this….

Highwayman: Your money or your life!

Victim: Take my life, I’m saving for my old age!

I always have found this joke funny, but also ironically sad.

How often do we postpone something that would do us good now, for some unknown and unquantifiable event in the future?

Not Very OK At All….

“Piglet?” said Pooh.
“Yes Pooh?” said Piglet.
“Do you ever have days when everything feels… Not Very Okay At All? And sometimes you don’t even know why you feel Not Very Okay At All, you just know that you do.”
Piglet nodded his head sagely. “Oh yes,” said Piglet. “I definitely have those days.”
“Really?” said Pooh in surprise. “I would never have thought that. You always seem so happy and like you have got everything in life all sorted out.”
“Ah,” said Piglet. “Well here’s the thing. There are two things that you need to know, Pooh. The first thing is that even those pigs, and bears, and people, who seem to have got everything in life all sorted out… they probably haven’t. Actually, everyone has days when they feel Not Very Okay At All. Some people are just better at hiding it than others.
“And the second thing you need to know… is that it’s okay to feel Not Very Okay At All. It can be quite normal, in fact. And all you need to do, on those days when you feel Not Very Okay At All, is come and find me, and tell me. Don’t ever feel like you have to hide the fact you’re feeling Not Very Okay At All. Always come and tell me. Because I will always be there.”

I’m Sorry, I Forgot Myself……

What do we mean by “I forgot myself”. The chances are we are apologizing for some behaviour we don’t feel good about. Perhaps we said or did something that our conscience is telling us was wrong or perhaps we didn’t do something we promised we would do. We are not behaving in accordance with our highest ideals.

So why “I forgot myself”? Because it’s true. Our mind was probably elsewhere, being angry, being worried, being frightened, being so engrossed in what we were thinking about that we quite literally forgot ourselves.

What is the antidote to forgetting yourself? It’s obvious, “remember yourself”! Has anyone heard of that? It’s not an expression that is so well known. In the work of G. Gurdjieff and P. Ouspensky it is mentioned quite a lot. They call it “self-remembering”. When we remember ourselves those conscience pricking incidents tend not to happen.

How do you remember yourself? There is a video below of Roy Whitten, a founder of More To Life explaining it and offering some practice. Roy calls self-remembering, split attention but they are very similar. Roy and his colleague Brad Brown wrote a course called The Power of Self Esteem.

It’s a course I call “A Course for a Happier Life ~ The Power of Self Esteem” and I run this course in London and Surrey throughout the year. If you would like to know when and where please ask via our Contact Page.

A Course for a Happier Life

The secret is Self-Esteem, but What is Self Esteem?

Your ability to feel love and compassion for yourself,
whatever the situation or circumstance you find yourself in.

That’s a simple thing to do, isn’t it? Love yourself.

“Easier said than done!”? True. It is easier to say it but saying it doesn’t make it happen. But once you know how, it isn’t that hard at all.

I run a course called “A Course for a Happier Life ~ The Power of Self Esteem” and I run this course in London and Surrey throughout the year. If you would like to know when and where please ask via our Contact Page.

The Slimmers Cycle, and it’s not a bike!

Have you been trying to lose weight and is it taking longer than you thought?

If you are anything like me you have probably lost all the weight you ever needed to, the problem is that we keep putting it on again. I call this The Slimmers Cycle

Why is it that we have lapses in our weight loss goals?

The 10 points of The Slimmers Cycle:

If you are like me it may well happen like this:

  1. Something happens we don’t like.
  2. We feel bad
  3. We go off track
  4. We feel bad about going off track
  5. We stay off track
  6. We feel worse because we have stayed off track
  7. We don’t get back on track
  8. The feeling gradually goes away
  9. We get back on track
  10. We feel better

What’s common in the above.

We feel bad! But how long has it taken to get from 1 to 10?

When we feel bad about ourselves it means that our Self-Esteem has taken a hit, because that’s what Self Esteem is, how we feel about ourselves.

So how can this cycle be broken?

Stop things happening we don’t like? Stopping things you don’t like is probably not very realistic and likely to be impossible.

Go to stage 2 and stop feeling bad. Is that possible?

Yes! Strange as it may seem it is, but people do not realise that it is possible or how to do it. You can see that if you stop the above cycle at stage 2 you never get to stage 3, going off track.

How would your weight loss be if you had never gone off track?

How can you stop feeling bad and break the cycle? Come to our course on Self-Esteem Enhancement and learn how to stop feeling bad and feel good about yourself.

The Power of “A Course for a Happier Life ~ The Power of Self Esteem” will show you how to:

  • Notice when and why you are feeling bad.
  • Stop beating yourself up about it.
  • Feel better about yourself and stay on track.

And the really great thing is that you can apply this to everything in your life, not just slimming.

A Course in Happiness

Self Esteem

Self Esteem, your ability to feel love and compassion for yourself, whatever the situation or circumstance you find yourself in.

Self Esteem is the foundation of our lives. It is the way we feel about ourselves.

A wise man once said, “Do not build your house upon the sand, build it on rock”.

The meaning of that can be interpreted in different ways. But consider your house to mean your life and the choice of sand or rock to be your choice about the way you feel about yourself. How well are you going to do in relationships, parenting, at work, if deep down inside you think you are a miserable worm? What sort of emotions is that going to create and what kind of life will you create for yourself and those around you? Not as good as you could I would suggest!

I will agree not everything is doom and gloom. So often we are happy when things are going well and unhappy when things are going badly.

Look at the statement at the top of the post again. Have I just described that? No, I have just described having your buttons pushed by every random thing that happens to you.

You can change that and I would like to show you how.

I run a course on the Power of Self Esteem and I call it “A Course for a Happier Life”.
